Have you all heard of the blog Cupcakes and Cashmere? For most of you, I am guessing that question is the equivalent of asking, "Does a one-legged duck swim in a circle?"
{Yes}.
Way back in January of 2010 when I started this blog - before I started my clothing line - truth be told I did not even understand what a blog was. It became a creative outlet for me to take my mind off of bottles and diapers, and I aimlessly started typing and posting about things that I found interesting, discussed products {or shoes} that I was passionate about or pretty much anything I wanted to share. A few months into this new universe of the blogosphere, I quickly grew attached to a handful of wonderful blogs like A Cup of Jo, La Dolce Vita, Elements of Style, The City Sage, Coco+Kelley, Dilly Dallas, Pink Wallpaper, Sea of Shoes {another DFW gal with hair so red it will make you blush} and This Is Glamorous - just to name a handful of my very faves, though there are so many more! - that had been around far longer than I had...they clearly knew what they were doing ;)
One of those was Cupcakes and Cashmere, and it is still a delight to read. Created by Emily Schuman {I mean I don't know about you, but I have never met an Emily who wasn't as cute as a button so you know it's going to be all cotton candy like} who previously worked at Teen Vogue and Domino before making blogging her career, she focuses primarily on fashion and food with other great bits and pieces of her lovely life sprinkled in. She documents her wonderfully unique style {click here to see her style evolution...love seeing how her outfits and photos have changed over the years}, and she also makes desserts that quintuple my cellulite just by looking at them.
Cupcakes and Cashmere continues to grow at light speed, and next on Emily's list is a book that I hope will clue me in on how she manages to do daily blog posts, have a completely clutter-free desk {I don't even remember what color the top of my desk is it's buried under so many papers} and make toasted marshmallow shakes from dawn til dusk while still having the best legs west of the Mississippi. {I wanted to say the entire US but Giselle lives in NYC...soz Emily}
I confess: I am totally jelly of her spit-up free clothes and always freshly washed hair. Oh how I miss those cherished moments of showering daily! For the record, it is not gross and completely allowed when you have teeny babies.
Anyway, my favorite series that Emily does is called Five Things. Check out her most recent post here. The concept is simple yet wonderful: she takes photographs of five things that have made her happy that day or that week. So basic, but that is the point. Taking the time to reflect back on five simple things that brought her joy. Why don't we all do this? I am completely inspired every time I read a new Five Things post, and given the fact that my life with a new {and thankfully booming - so no complaints} business and two babies under two years old is nothing short of a hectic and overwhelming three ring circus on the best of days, I am going to make more of an effort to take my mind out of the hustle and bustle of daily life and notice the little things that bring me joy. Here is my first attempt at highlighting a few things that made me feel nice and cozy this week:

The fact that more than 50% of the time I forget to put the top back on the milk carton and my family still loves me.
My eye mask that says everything it needs to say when mama is off duty and needs to go to her happy place.
My very very favorite photos of me and Biz resting on my closet vanity, a reminder every morning of how lucky I am.
Goodies from next year's collection arriving from Bali in the mail.
Orange juice in a wine glass, for those type of mornings when it's not even 10am, you have spit up running down your neck and back, are trying to change a dirty diaper with one hand while holding the phone for a conference call in the other, have just been smacked upside the head with a wooden Thomas the Train engine, your lab brought a dead squirrel to your doorstep as a present to show you what a good hunting dog he is {that you discovered by stepping on it...barefoot}, and you just really really need something in a stem to make it until nap time.
Number One Secret from the Mommy Code Book: Everything is better in a stem!
Now you try it. What are the simple treasures in your life? Thanks, Emily, for reminding us to never overlook the small stuff :)))
Happy Week everyone!
xoxo Sheridan

Sheridan I love this post! I can relate to every word you just wrote, a little to well, except my dog didn't leave a dead squirrel, he decided to leave something babies do in diapers {wink} next to the door because he was angry we didn't go for a walk quick enough. I never thought if enjoying OJ from a wine glass in the morning and now that will be my new trick to sanity on mornings like today! Cheers! Nicole
ReplyDeleteLove what Emily does and I hope you keep up with this weekly series and whatever that wonderful fabric is going to be made in to, I need it immediately!
ReplyDeleteI could prob break that down into a few sentences instead of one jumbo run on but what fun with that be?!
love this list, darling! i'm going to write myself a sticky note and put it inside my glasses cabinet to remind myself that when i have children everything will be better in a stem. :)
ReplyDeleteIm very very interested in seeing the rest of that photo of the new Spring 2012 collection. I can tell it's going to be redic awesome. The color lime green is on it so yeah its mine. Me want more.
ReplyDeleteMy hubby (40 years and counting...) has orange juice in a wine glass waiting every morning...that's a LOT of orange juice! franki
ReplyDeleteYour fridge looks just like mine! :) The worst is when you take the carton of milk out of the fridge, not realizing there isn't a lid on it, and shake, shake, shake! You would think I'd learn, but I've done it on several occasions.
ReplyDeletePS: I have my Naked juice in a wine glass EVERY morning - there's something about it that makes my day 10x brighter.
