Big Boy Room!

I need some advice stat!

Here's the deal. I am starting to kind of think about switching Big Squish and Miss Munchkin's rooms around. The nursery is huge and babies don't need all that space, and it would be great for Squish to have it instead for his 10,001 Hot Wheels. If I do this, I will cover the yellow striped nursery ceiling of course and go ahead and get a big boy bed for Squish. I really want him to have a full size bed also, not twins. The first picture and two photos below are my primary inspiration photos.

Here is what he currently has:
{1} Navy and white striped curtains. The fabric is a great Ralph Lauren - 8" thick horizontal stripes - exactly like the stripes in the top photo. Love. I want him to have these through high school and when he is home for college. Same goes for the headboard. I do things once, great quality, so they last and last.
{2} He also has the orange and white zebra rug from Jonathan Adler as shown in the photo below...
{3} ...As well as a HUGE arm chair and ottoman I want to recover as it is perfect for reading in every night. Literally all four of us fit in it!!!
{4} We also have a very dark brown leather ottoman I could put at the foot of the bed that I think could look nice since the room has the space for it, and it would be a great way for him to climb into the bed before he can easily get in by himself.
{5} The nightstands on either side of his crib right now are like literally out of an old western movie. Seriously. They are old old wood, like you would find out in an old barn on a ranch, but they are pretty cool. So I am open to keeping these OR buying two new chests of drawers for him as night stands. There is not a closet in the room so this might be the most sensible idea.

So given that info and these photos, I mean there is obviously a big theme with the color palette I like - here are my questions: should I just paint the ceiling dark blue? Or should I do the entire room dark/navy blue...or is that too dark for a toddler? What headboard do I get? I would like it upholstered, most likely with nailhead trim. Maybe I just need to go find fabric first and play around. I like the brown velvet and it would go with everything, and I could use it in a future guest room. But too boring? Would I get sick of orange? Would an orange headboard be too much with the zebra rug? Should I find a patterned fabric that would hide dirt from muddy boy head and hands rubbing against it? Or patterned fabric for the chair and ottoman?

I am loving these Jennifer Delonge storage units:

They come in tons of great colors {including orange, navy, white, wood....}

The nesting storage is great, too. One side of the top is wood and the other is chalk! Rock on.

See here on her site.
{prepare to stay for at least an hour. everything she does is amazetastic.}

NOTE: I DO NOT. LIKE. TRENDY. And I am worried adding in bits of lime green is too trendy for me in the long run! I want to do the "big" pieces, namely the headboard, and potentially those chests of drawers, so they will last for 20+ years, but I will get things like the storage to accommodate his age and make the room work for him. But where do I start?! Tell me what to do about the ceiling, and then let me know what to do on the headboard...and then we can talk about the fabric for the chair, and pillows, and where I can find some awesome chests of drawers because I have painting out of my system until 2014. Sources! Give me sources! I feel like I have exhausted my source file on my computer and can't come up with anything that seems right. No Jonathan Adler type chests of drawers por favor.

Oh and I also like the idea of some big, patterned pillows...

The problem is that I like soooooo many styles of design. As with fashion and how I dress, sometimes I am feminine and girly, sometimes I am bold, sometimes I am rock n roll, sometimes I am modern and minimalist, sometimes I am hippie. Oh geez.

TELL ME WHAT TO DO! Want the room dimensions? ;)

  1. What color blue are you thinking of for the ceiling? Navy like the curtains? You could do a lighter blue as a way to bring in a different color without being trendy. I like dark ceilings and walls in theory but in real life I always end up repainting because the rooms feel too dark. I do think that lime green probably won't have the staying power you're looking for although it is very now.

I can vouch for dressers (and desks) as nightstands; they're so incredibly useful! I'd get something old/antique so any nicks and scratches they acquire will blend in. You also wouldn't have to worry about them ever looking dated!

  2. Ooh fun! Look in issues of House Beautiful for the past few months and there is an article on paint colors for kids rooms, which I remember having examples of lots of blue hues that are versatile. I'm thinking it was the April or May issue, but I'd have to go dig and be sure.

I think that you may want to use a cheaper fabric for the headboard while Squish is young and likely to mess something up with markers and stickers, then you can recover the same headboard with something else when he's older and unlikely to have sticky hands :)

    Good luck!

  3. There is nothing more fun to me than doing a room! I think dark blue on the ceiling might be too much for a little one, you can always paint it when he gets older. How about Ikat brown fabric with nail headed headboard. I think it would hide lots of stains. As for the dresser, I know i think furniture should last 20+ years, but my kids have torn up their dresser. The drawers have been pulled out all the way too many times trying to help put away clothes, get dressed, or jammies. We got good furniture, but they are just rough with it. Canton isn't far from you, maybe you could find something there that might work? I like the orange rug. Can't wait to see the end result.

  4. Everything you've mentioned so far sounds fantastic. I think a child's room should be bright, so I would nix the all navy bedroom. Have you seen the Serena and Lily headboards http://www.serenaandlily.com/Headboards-Beds-Fillmore-Headboard-Nailheads . You can order them in different fabrics. If you have a good upholstery person, you can have them design a headboard for you. That might end up being more cost effective... and you would get something that you would love. I like the look of the last bed you posted... with the nailhead and ribbon below. It looks masculine enough but could easily be incorporated into a guest bedroom AND it wouldn't show dirty finger and crayon marks. I love lime green and thing it would look great in the room. Add it with accessories though because that is something that you may not dig quite as much in 5+ years. Maybe with some storage options... http://www.landofnod.com/kids-shelf-storage/kids-storage-and-shelving/1 or with pillows on the chairs or bed http://www.etsy.com/listing/68054103/decorative-pillows-throw-pillow-covers?ref=sr_list_9&ga_search_submit=&ga_search_query=lime+green+pillow&ga_search_type=handmade&ga_facet=handmade

  5. I think all navy room is def too dark and that painting only the ceiling would look superb. I second the "cheaper" fabric for the headboard - even I remember drawing on the walls at age 3 - not sure why I did it. I just remember doing it! Crazy. Maybe there is some fabric that is easily washable? Or dark fabric is probably drawing proof :) I love the orange pop on the navy so I think that you can't go wrong with "too much" orange.

  6. I like the feel of the first pic the best. It is a young but also classic look. Go for a nautical Ralph Lauren meets Hermes style with youthful accents you can swap out as he grows. He will probably want a real zebra skin wants he starts hunting. I love navy lacquered walls. Maybe you could brighten them up with framed prints or even his own artwork with big white borders. These nightstands would offer tons of storage. http://www.bungalow5.com/products-niagara-3-drawer-cerused-oak-5--NIA-30-94_09.php
And maybe this as an accent table next to your big chair http://www.bungalow5.com/products-taboret-stool-side-table-orange-5--TAB-10-13.php
I think maybe do a big old trunk at the end of the bed.
And top it off with a little glitz with my fave- a ship chandelier

  7. The image at the bottom of your post has been pinned to my cork board since EOS posted it. It's the inspriration for our MBR. Love.

For a toddler's BR, a cloth headboard is a magnet for dirt/stains. Something you can wipe down is more practical. Kids' room decor has a short shelf life. At 6, my oldest wanted pink walls. At 8 she would not be caught dead with anything pink in her room. Classic pieces in neutral colors work best, along with linens/curtains that you can swap out later as they grow.

  8. You can't go wrong with a burlap headboard with nailhead trim. probably easiest DIY job (or i mean you could just pay someone if i were you.) I say no to lime green. Orange and navy are wonderful together. I mean hello, war eagle. Auburn Tigers are the current national champions. Obviously orange and navy work!
    1. this is indoor/outdoor fabric (hello easy clean) but would look good with orange/navy since it's a neutral http://www.fabric.com/ProductDetail.aspx?ProductID=e3f441c9-de30-4e8b-aa92-aa2122a3fcd0&CategoryID=8b4da562-a55d-4ae0-8d9c-d24ef495062f
    2. you need a james dean print! (not in this frame, it's just for show!) https://www.auburnart.com/auburnuniversitymascotaubieandpetethecatsidekickbyaugradjamesdean-p-710.html

  9. Could you do a check/gingham headboard and matching bedskirt? My brother's room is masculine yet charming. My mother painted it a nantucket red and the headboard is navy and red gingham same with bedskirt. Lots of map prints all over and dark wood furniture from antique store in Charleston, SC. I would leave the ceiling ivory if you paint the walls dark. Maybe put a gigantic stuffed giraffe in the corner?

  10. I would probably think you are kind of crazy if you put a fabric headboard in a little boys room - I mean you would just be asking to replace it over and over (and if you do nailhead you won't be able to remove it to toss in the wash). I also think all navy walls would be too dark, but I LOVE the navy stripes you show!! I personally want to do Leontine linen sets for all my children - something like this for a boy http://www.leontinelinens.com/index.php/bed/product/mark/

I think orange and navy would be spectacular, and agree lime green would be too trendy.

Whatever you do, I know it will look great!!

  11. I love those striped walls and the orange zebra rug is to die for!

  12. Headboard: I love the brown velvet idea and it can certainly take a beating. What about a suiting fabric/pinstripe for the headboard? Mary McDonald did a TDF living room for a bachelor with the blue walls you want and the drapes were the pinstripe. I did it at our last house for hubby's office... love. Or what about a plaid for the headboard? Ralph Lauren makes some over the moon good ones. The plaid hides so much and will give you colors to work with. I'm doing a busy Porthault print for my little girl when she moves out of the nursery in the next few months because the pattern is so busy that it'll hide all her stains but also she'll have it forever. I am also doing a fabric headboard and bedskirt (pink tiger or pink chevron...) for when she's young but will prob replace it with a four poster we have later on so I'm doing a wild fabric that goes with Porthault's New York Mille Fleurs.

1st dibs for the dresser!! I have random antiques in her room (200 year old chapel chairs from England with silver trays for nighstands, etc) mixed with a Trofast storage system from Ikea for toys, books, etc. It'll only be in there a few years until I put a desk in its place. I like that you can do different color storage bins in the Trofast and they're plastic (washable for when she smears chocolate almond butter or berries in the bins).

For my pop of color/accent color (like there aren't enough colors in her bed linens) I got 8 frames (11"x20" or something like that??) in different silver leaf patterns and then had a solid piece of kelly green matting put in them. That's where I'll put all her drawings, finger paintings, etc through the years for a rotating gallery so it doesn't get cluttered anywhere. Maybe you could do something similar with orange mats the color of the rug? I'm sure your preshy boy is an artiste and has lots to display.

I would go for it with the walls. The room is large enough and bright enough in my opinion.

So fun to transition to the "big boy" room! It'll be beautiful and enduring, whatever you choose.

  13. LOVING all of these helpful ideas guys!! I am leaning towards doing the ceiling dark to start, and if I want to paint the walls later I can. I figure it is easier to start with less and add more than the other way around.

Sarah I am going to need a picture of your girl's room when it is finished!!! CHEVRON skirt! That is my absolutely favorite pattern though so I am biased :)) Great suggestion about the Trofast from Ikea. I will look into that for sure.

Will update you all soon with some clear direction as to where this is going! xx

  14. I adore the first bedroom, orange and navy are so current and fresh. What if the walls were a super high gloss navy for some glamour and the headboards in a durable and textured fabric that is predominantly navy blue but with varying shades of other blues...nailheads would add masculinity. Love the idea of the leather ottoman for masculinity AND accessibility. Bold throw pilllows and Hermes throws to tie with the zebra rug at the foot. I would do a queen instead of full for longterm flexibility...it will make the room more functional for out of town guests as well. Crisp white lamps and definitely antiques chests as nightstands. I have 3 children and have antique chests in all 3 bedrooms. You can put a thin piece of plexiglass (cut to fit) on top for the younger years. There was a beautiful high gloss navy room on Patricia Grey's blog several months ago for reference. I would do a varying shade of blue on the ceiling possibly from the headboard. Good luck! I can't wait to see the finished product b/c everything you do looks amazing!

  15. Whew...just looked up the price of an orange Hermes throw...kaching! $2575!!! Not kid friendly... but there has to be great knock off of one somewhere in cyberspace. I found an orange Hermes tray for essentially pennies so maybe there's one out there...or at least I can dream. I want one for my den but not at that price!!!

  16. I hope this link works, because I have been obsessed with it since seeing it.

I think it would work later in a grown up guest room too. I'm in love.

You have amazing taste, so whatever you come up with would be better than I could imagine!

  17. i know i am late to respond, but i have been looking for this picture of a big boy room i saw in Elle Decor. i have yet to put my finger on it, but i will keep looking.
It was painted grey and i thought it would be great with navy striped bedding and lots of cool patterned accents in the room (which you already have). My baby is only 9 months old and I am already brainstorming about (and collecting/hoarding cool things for) his big boy room. the grey was a really nice bright grey, so it didn't feel drab at all. i hope i can find the picture to show you. if not, when i get my little man's room re-done, i will share with you then :).

  18. Ok well let me start off by saying that I've never responded to anyone's blog before, so this is a first! Here we go... I have to start off by saying I always love all of your ideas and you have a great way of putting them together. (your house looks awesome) but I understand sometimes it's hard to have a jumping off point. I know you spent a lot off time painting the ceiling, are you considering keeping it? If you are there are always ways to find fabrics to help tie everything together. Love the idea of painting the room navy but it's hard to say if it would be too dark whith out seeing the room or knowing how much light it gets.

As for the headboard I would definitely go upholstered with nailheads, love it. I wouldnt worry about messy hair and hands because I think you would catch that sort of thing before it was too late. (but my little boy is only 5 months so I haven't quiet experienced "Boys" yet) I know of a great dresser/night stand you should check out! I wanted to use it for my little boys room but by the time I found it I already had his room figured out. I saw it at a store in Houston so I'll have my friend send me the info tomorrow.

Lastly I'm an interior designer, we have just moved to town (or back to town, I went to tcu and my husband is from ft worth) so if you are looking for someone to bounce ideas off of I'm totally available. I'm not a complete wierdo :) I'm from midland and my parents are know your in-laws.

  19. Jen I really do love that yellow striped ceiling, but I am ready to move on. That was just for the nursery in my head and I think going an alternative route would be more suitable for Squish. I will be sad to roll over the stripes...but excited to start the next decorating phase :)

Can't wait to know about the dresser you speak of in Houston! Tell me tell me!!

Are you related to John/Kendall btw??

    ReplyDelete
  20. Yes I am. John is my brother in law.

Ok well I have not heard back from my friend but I found the dresser on her stores website. If you go to the website, click on The Showroom - Furniture/Accessories - Armoires and Chests. It is down at the bottom it is called: 10126-Reclaimed Wood and Metal Numbers Chest. It looks better in person, that picture is a bit dark. But I love it b/c it is fun without being too serious and I think it would really work well in an older boys room as well a younger boy. Plus I love the fact that it is a metal chest with wood drawers! That way you are able to bring in another element besides wood in the room.

    The website is: http: //www.designhousetx.com/home.html

Hope that helps. Also, I am totally serious if you just want to have someone to bounce ideas off of, I'm available. Haven't found a job yet so I've got some time on my hands. :)

  22. I was actually tied up all day yesterday and did not even have time to read through and publish comments! Sorry!!!! Ok that chest is awesome! That is a feel I had not considered - lighter wood with metal. I will for sure keep you in mind for ideas and thoughts when I get this project underway. My mom is an interior designer so I am always taking to her about things, and it will be nice to have outside opinions and tastes! I'm going to go peruse your friend's site some more.... love new sources! xxxx

  23. I am like you in that we buy our children their furniture once. My kids dressers are vintage or antiques...(not "kid furniture). I think the place to bring in things that might be "current" (I like that better than trendy) is though a few pillows or fun accessories. I think the brown velvet headboard is a GREAT idea (or even a gray mohair). Nailhead trim is always a classic and like Jen said above Squish probably won't be getting into bed with dirty hands so I think fabric will be fine.

You have gotten some GREAR ideas. Can't wait to see it!

    ReplyDelete
  24. Ok, people have given you such fabulous suggestions, that I am just going to insist that you keep us up to date with your design process.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Personal opinion - Navy Grasscloth, hides everything even holes on walls after squish wants to display his artwork.Otherwise paint the walls a deep rich navy. It is not too dark. To make covering the ceiling easy, wallpaper it with a graphic design. Even a tone on tone white/cream would be a nice touch. And don't be afraid of upholstered headboards for kids, just don't do white. I do them all the time in toddler rooms and they are great. As long as you don't allow eating in the bedroom you will be fine.

Good luck! Can't wait to see the progress!
