Oscar Round-Up

Mandy Moore - Monique Lhuillier - Oscars 2011 - Academy Awards
Mandy Moore in Monique Lhuillier

Nothing specific to write about but the best Oscar gowns! Red was the color of the evening, as were girly details like lace, tulle, sparkles and feathers. I love Mandy's Monique Lhuiller number. It reminds me of the dress I will wear down my cotton candy diamond glitter aisle.

Absolutely stunning.

If I had to pick a favorite dress, this might be it. Usually there is a major stand out gown for me at the Oscar's but this year there wasn't. Cate's dress is extremely unique though - her clothing choices always are - and I can't stop looking at the details. Really love it.

What a PERFECT cut and fit!

Simple but cute and classic. It looks like she stepped right out of the 60s and I love it.

Michelle Williams in Chanel

Another woman who always makes interesting and lovely fashion choices. She wears things that many could not get away with and still ends up on best dressed lists. Everything she dons takes on a special feeling and the clothes never wear her. I really admire her style.

Helen Mirren

She always looks gorgeous, and seeing her with dark nail polish makes me so happy. I won't have to give mine up any time soon!

Baby monitor lighting to go. Happy Sunday everyone - have a fabulous week!

The Power of Accessories

Accessories not only have a tremendous effect on fashion but on interior design as well. Combing through some of my favorite websites today {it is officially impossible for me to sleep when the baby sleeps} I came across a great series of photos on House Beautiful demonstrating the ways little touches can lead to big results and completely transform a room. Here are my top 5 favorite tips:

{1} Have different levels of things to notice in a room.

{2} Invest in a great stool. They are the perfect spot to place a tray and also allow for extra seating.

{3} Use a great rug as the foundation for a room and build off of it.

{4} What every man wants to hear: Pile on the pillows! Pillows are one of the easiest ways to experiment with color and instantly add touches of pattern.

{5} Most important of all: accessories do not have to be expensive! Fruit or flowers are small additions that can make a big difference and change the mood of the room in a heartbeat.

AND can we just talk about these shoes for one sec? By my two fave shoe designers: Louboutin and Miu Miu. Heartsies. Need both now. I can clearly wear them with everything from swimsuits to pajamas so thankfully they would be sensible investments.

Quest for Diaper Bag #2

You are all on the edge of your seats already after reading that title...I can tell.

Seriously though, finding a good diaper bag is a big deal. I still use the one I have for Big Squish and love every fiber of it, but I never thought I would need to get a second for baby #2. Turns out I was wrong as we still use bag #1 all the time for him whether it be in the car with extra supplies or a night out at grandma's house. FYI his is by Mia Bossi as shown above. As I said, I adore it, but really didn't do a lot of searching before purchasing as I knew several people that had it and loved it, so that was that.

This time, I have been searching. And searching. I want something different than Mia Bossi, as wonderful as it has been, just for a little change, and find myself going back to two brands: DwellStudio and OiOi. A lot of people really love Petunia Pickle Bottom but personally they aren't my style. They do make an amazing one for men that is fantastic, as does SkipHop:

I felt sure I would purchase a Dwell bag as there are endless styles and patterns that are both chic and playful at the same time. What more could a sleep deprived mother want? If it makes me look slightly more put together I'm sold. Here are just a handful of my favorites:

I thought I had found it when I came across that little sparrow one above with the matching travel kit. Then, I checked out one of my favorite online sites, Layla Grayce. Pricey, yes, but fabulous, and I came across OiOi. They have this cute giraffe number below, which is great...

...but then I saw IT. My heart proceeded to melt as the clouds opened and the angels sang. AN IKAT DIAPER BAG. Shut the front door.

They {by they I mean both Layla Grayce and OiOi} have lots of other cute stuff but who cares because I just found an ikat diaper bag. Quest over.

Heart-Shaped Monte Cristo

Using a heart-shaped cutter, transform the classic Monte Cristo sandwich into a romantic treat that's perfect for Valentine's Day or an anniversary celebration. One of my favorite treats worth every second of the preparation!

  • 3 eggs, lightly beaten
  • 1 cup half-and-half
  • 1 tsp. vanilla extract
  • 1⁄8 tsp. freshly grated nutmeg
  • 1 1⁄2 tsp. firmly packed light brown sugar
  • Pinch of salt
  • 4 slices country-style or homemade bread,
    each 1 1⁄2 inches thick
  • 8 thin slices ham
  • 4 thin slices Swiss or Gruyère cheese
  • Raspberry preserves for serving

Preheat an electric panini press according to the manufacturer's instructions.

In a bowl, whisk together the eggs, half-and-half, vanilla, nutmeg, brown sugar and salt until blended. Pour into a shallow baking dish.

Using a small, sharp knife, cut a slit in one long side of each bread slice.

Stuff 2 slices ham and 1 slice cheese in each pocket and press gently to close. Place the stuffed bread in the egg mixture and soak for 2 minutes per side.

If desired, lightly brush the panini press with butter or spray with nonstick cooking spray. Place the bread on the press and cook according to the manufacturer's instructions until crisp and golden, 2 to 3 minutes.

Transfer the sandwiches to a cutting board and cut each one into a heart shape using a heart toast cutter. Serve immediately with raspberry preserves. Serves 4. Thanks Williams-Sonoma!

Valentine's Day

This is my favorite day of the year. Well, maybe not very favorite...I really love Christmas morning...but there is just something wonderful about Valentine's Day. I know I know, it is typically thought of as a Hallmark holiday only created to sell cards, but what could be better than an entire day dedicated to celebrating love? {I'm sure some of you are gagging right about now.} I'm serious though! One thing is certain: all you need is love.

For those of you that got a bit queasy reading the above paragraph, go ahead and stop here because it's about to get really mushy. You can't say I didn't warn you if you choose to keep going!

The love of my life is Biz, of course, and he does so much for me and our family that I wanted to dedicate this special Valentine's Day post to him and brag just a smidge about his amazingness. I came across this little coupon book in the back of my bathroom drawer I have called "Porn for Women" which I can't believe I just typed - my grandmother reads this. Forgive me...and let me explain. So, this Porn for Women coupon book is composed of little faux coupons to give to your significant other; according to the cover, they are "Redeemable for the Love, Affection and Housework You Deserve." I started flipping through and realized that Biz does nearly all of them on a regular basis: buys me shoes, adheres to bathroom etiquette aka puts the seat down {for any men who happen to be reading this yes, it's that big of a deal}, snuggles, gives me meaningful, unsolicited compliments, flowers, full control of the remote and wardrobe privileges so I can pick his outfits.

Pretty stinkin' great, right? I'm not quite finished though! Life becomes more difficult when Mommy works, and he really picks up the slack when I fall short. These next things may not seem like a big deal to those of you without kids but trust me, they are - at least to me! - especially with a newborn. He will do the grocery shopping whenever I need him to, loads and unloads the dishwasher, makes dinner at least twice a week {I got him a grill for Christmas so that might have been a little bit of strategerey on my part}, feeds Big Squish breakfast and dinner most days and more often than not, that routine has become a complete nightmare with more food on Biz and the floor than in Big Squish, and gives him a bath. In my book, those things that alleviate so much of my stress right now are the equivalent of the ultimate candlelit dinner/walk on the beach/cuddling by the fire/a dozen roses every week/hot air balloon ride with champagne/romantic weekend to a vineyard/picnic in the sunshine/getting cozy under the stars date. All combined. Oh and he doesn't say a word about taking our wedding pictures - for five hours - while he has pneumonia - with silly props like blue bicycles and a fedora that I made him wear and pretends to ignore his friends making fun of him the entire time. Yes honey it meant that much to me, I still remember it and I always will! You are amazing. {He is either reading this and agreeing with me or completely embarrassed that I am telling everyone all of this...just so he doesn't lose his street cred, he also does very manly caveman things like shoot guns and skin animals and you could send him out into the wilderness with a toothpick and a cotton ball and he could survive for weeks}

Biz, not a single day has gone by since we met that I haven't thanked God for bringing you into my life. I feel like the luckiest girl in the world. I love you to the moon and back.
So, Happy Valentine's Day to everyone tomorrow! Even if you aren't attached at the moment, treat yourself to some flowers or some chocolate or both - whatever you want! - to make the day special just for you. You deserve it!

xoxo Sheridan

p.s. I intentionally misspelled strategerey up there. It's from an SNL skit, just so you don't think I'm crazy! Here's the link :)

Y'all. I got into my pre-pregnancy skinny jeans today. I'm not gonna lie though - it was an uphill battle the second my foot slipped into the leg. I had on Spankx {the Target line she does, which is just as good and half as expensive by the way} but I definitely needed about 6 more pairs. You know the jean dance? Where you like jump all around kind of doing lunges trying with all your might to pull them up?? Yeah. That was the scene in my closet this afternoon. I was this close to laying on the bed and using pliers to pull the zipper up. I wasn't going down without a fight though and I WON! I have a bruise on my hip {not a lie} because they were so tight, but it was worth it. Had to look good for the baby shower I was headed to! Doi! {So ok, my brother sent me a text message today with the word "doi" in it and I wonder why everyone quit using it?! Amazing word. Life changing. I'm bringing it back.}

Everyone soak this in because it was the first time in the past four weeks that I haven't been wearing something on my bottom half that was made of at least 90% spandex with an elastic waist, or Biz's pajama pants. And I am already back into that routine as I type this. And plan to stay that way at least through the end of February. And my hip bruise is happy.

I loooove these shoes. Prada. A surprise from Biz - in Aspen - over New Years - two months after we met. He left them behind my pillow so I found them when I got into my bed. ROMANTIC!!! The heels are purple flowers with a stem...see? So lovely!

Jeans - Ralph Lauren. Shirt - Theory. Jacket - Escada, a gift from my super sweet {and super stylish} mother-in-law. I wear it ALL the time.

Also love these earrings from Biz. Hard to tell from the photo, but they are a little cluster of diamonds that make a flower. They were my anniversary, have a baby, and first Mother's Day present all wrapped into one. Understandable ;)

Dutch. We call him our Zoolander dog because he is just like a male model. Gorgeous on the outside but nothing between the ears.

Have a relaxing Sunday everyone! xoxo Sheridan

So much to post, so little time!

This is how I have been going outside as of late. Hot, no? We have had too much snow and ice for our own good - really, a lot for Texas - over the past two weeks so it has been all me and no babysitters. There are so many things I want to share with you all and I just haven't had a second to sit down and type! Right now, however, the miracle of all miracles has happened: Big Squish is asleep in his crib and baby girl is asleep in hers. Hallelujah! Let me see how much I can type in the 46 seconds this peace and quiet will last for...

Ok so first thing's first: Pre-Fall collections have debuted and here is a small sampling of my favorite looks. There are probably a million more, but in all honesty I have only looked through a handful of collections because I have more important things to do like play trains with Squish :)

Chanel. Dying for those trousers. And I actually love her hair.

Mulberry! Send me that jacket stat!

Carolina Herrera. I don't think this is technically a wedding dress, but isn't it one of the most beautiful gowns you have ever seen? When Biz and I renew our vows in my dream fairy princess wedding under the Eiffel Tower, or perhaps in the gardens at Versailles, I will wear this. And the aisle will be made of cotton candy and scattered with glitter. No wait, diamonds. {Excuse my delusion. p.s. I fell asleep at a red light yesterday I'm so tired. Not. Cool.}

And last but not least, when I accept my Academy Award for Best Actress I shall be donning this snazzy Oscar de la Renta number. {Remember what I said about the delusion. Just run with it.}

Alrighty so that's all the fashion we have time for right now, but I do want to share some websites for those with kiddos. Do you guys subscribe to Stroller Traffic? It is by far my favorite of all favorite child-related email newsletters. I got one a few days ago entitled Generation Worry, and it included five fabulous websites - some I had heard of, some not - that I believe you will find extremely helpful:

{1} - Read expert and parent reviews to find out details of inappropriate {scary} parts of movies, TV shows, books, games, music, websites and apps.
{2} - AMAZING site. Love this till the cows come home. A comprehensive list of all things breastfeeding, including some helpful tips about bottle feeding as well.
{3} - Rates skincare products on a 0-10 scale for hazards including chemicals, toxins and allergens. Who knew formaldehyde was in, like, everything?!
{4} - Search for BPA-free baby products and supplies within categories ranging from toys to bibs to teethers.
{5} - Has a Dirty Dozen list of the really REALLY dirty fruits and veggies that for sure need washing.

And lastly...Valentine's Day is SOON! As Ernest Hemingway pointed out, there is delight and fun in discovering how you each feel. *sigh* Whether your style is witty or classic, you can put together a big or small surprise for that special someone. Just make sure you start planning today! Two things that I came across on one of my favorite sites {that I will post about soon..and by soon I mean hopefully sometime in 2011}

If my dogs were not shredders the size of bulldozers I would dress them in this.

These just look amazing and I would most definitely inhale them all in one sitting.

In other news, I made granola again but this time did so without spilling ten thousand seeds and nuts everywhere! Mom gold star. Also, Squish has decided he wants to pull out his bottom teeth whilst gagging himself...normal? Not normal? Anyone?? Ok I hear the critters making noise upstairs. Got to go! xoxo Sheridan

Most Wanted: Cathy Waterman Rings

I should not be posting right now. My ghostly appearance from lack of sleep is resembling the Twilight characters and my under eye circles are so deep they are giving the Grand Canyon a run for its money. The thing is, Valentine's Day is coming up and I'm already getting excited. I am the annoying girl you see on February 14th in pink clothing head to toe with glittery cupid earrings, red nails and most likely a heart sticker or two on my cheek. {So irritating, I know.}

So, when I come across some Cathy Waterman rings that combine gold, diamonds AND hearts I am in pre-V-day heaven! That is, as long as I avert my eyes away from the price tags. {They are four numbers long which is all I need to say about that. Yikes.} Which one would you most want to receive in a little tiny ring box this Valentine's Day?
